Breed Personality

The Bernese Mountain Dog is known for its gentle demeanor and striking appearance. While their size can be intimidating, they are affectionate, gentle, and good-natured, making them excellent family dogs.

Typically weighing between 70 to 115 pounds and standing about 23 to 28 inches tall at the shoulder they are proud beasts. With a long, thick, and double coat that is tricolored (black, white, and rust), they require regular grooming to manage shedding and maintain coat health.

 They have a moderate energy level and enjoy activities like walking, hiking, and playing but are not excessively energetic. Their lifespan is relatively short in comparison to other dogs, averaging around 6 to 8 years, partly due to their size and predisposition to certain health issues. Those health issues can include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and certain types of cancer.

They are intelligent and trainable, though sometimes they can be a bit stubborn, but some people find this to be a bit adorable. They are very loyal and protective of their families, this combined with their size makes them excellent watchdogs.

Breed Owner

While they are not overly energetic, Bernese Mountain Dogs enjoy regular outdoor activities and need daily exercise to stay healthy. Given their size, they do best in homes with ample space, preferably with a yard which will also make it easier to give them the activity time they need.

They thrive on companionship and can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for extended periods so this is not an ideal dog to be left at home alone for extended periods.

 Training a Bernese Mountain Dog requires patience and consistency due to their intelligent but sometimes stubborn nature so hopefully you are up for the challenge.

They are affectionate dogs and do best with owners who are loving and enjoy spending time with their pets. The shorter lifespan of this dog is something to consider as the pain of losing your pet can be substantial. Potential owners should be aware of the breed's health predispositions and be willing to invest in regular veterinary care.
