BREED PERSONALITY

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever, often called the "Chessie," is an American breed known for its strength, intelligence, and exceptional retrieving abilities. Originally bred to retrieve waterfowl in the icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay, Chessies are powerful swimmers with a water-resistant double coat that ranges in shades of brown, sedge, or deadgrass. Their coat is slightly oily, helping them stay warm and dry, and their webbed paws make them agile in the water.

Chessies are known for their independent and loyal nature. Unlike some retrievers, they can be a bit more reserved with strangers, making them excellent watchdogs as well as hunting companions. They’re highly intelligent, quick to learn, and tend to be more protective and stubborn than other retriever breeds. While they’re very loyal and loving with their families, they need firm, consistent training and socialization to reach their full potential.

BREED OWNER

Be prepared to give lots of time and energy exercising your Chessie. They love being able to spend  a lot of time outdoors, swimming and running, so they can be great for pet parents living in rural areas. Ideally, two hours per day walking, running, hiking, swimming and fetching will keep them content. Chesapeakes are moderate shedders and they can handle a variety of weather conditions. Weekly brushing to remove loose fur and prevent matting will be necessary.
