GREATER SWISS MOUNTAIN DOG: A very large working dog from Switzerland, originally used for herding cattle and guarding farms in the Alps’
BREED PERSONALITy
This breed lives for companionship and loves to jump up to your face and shove their bodies against yours. They will use their loud, deep voice to announce visitors. Some are sweet with other animals while others have a high prey drive. Swissys are slow to mature and remain like playful puppies for many years. Many times the Greater Swiss is “too much dog” for the normal household.
BREED OWNER
The Greater Swiss will need regular moderate exercise as he is much more athletic than one might assume. When children are involved, pulling a cart or sled around is wonderful. Obedience training should start as early as 3 months. As powerful as they are, they can easily pull the walker off their feet, so walking nicely on a leash is very important. Their coats are short and easy to care for.
