Breed Personality

The Australian Shepherd is a medium sized breed that typically weights around 50 pounds. They have a medium weight coat that can have a lovely wave to it and usually is blue or red merle with white and/or tan markings. This lovely coat along with their striking brown, blue or two different color eyes (heterochromia) make them beautiful dogs.

A highly intelligent dog breed that combined with their work oriented nature allows them to excel in obedience and agility training. They are known to develop strong bonds with their owners and entire family and can be legendarily loyal and protective. They Australian Shepherd does require intentional socialization as while they tend to be friendly with their owners without an effort they can be reserved around stranges and other animals. Being bred for herding their strong work ethic allows them to enjoy having a job to do.

Breed Owner

Australian Shepherds are best suited for active, dedicated owners who have the time, energy, and resources to meet the breed’s physical and mental needs. If you enjoy hiking or running you would be a good match for this breed. A good owner will need to be able to commit time to to training and play a well as this pup thrives on learning and having a sense of purpose. Without this mental and physical stimulation, they become bored and have known to exhibit destructive behavior. One other significant consideration is this breed does need regular grooming, bathing and brushing to maintain their coat, one will also need to be prepared for shedding.
